Monument of martyred city of Ypati
The Monument is dedicated to the people who were executed on 17 June 1944 by the Germans. The SS forces wishing to destroy Ypati, which was a major strategic base of the ELAS Rebels, burned the area, raided it and executed civilian and non-civilian population. Mansions and Byzantine churches burned down, houses were deserted, properties were seized, and women and children were taken to the cemetery for group execution. They left a full of ruins dead city. This incident is known as the Holocaust and is the reason why Ypati was proclaimed as a “Martyr City”.
