Monument of Chieftains 1821

Monument of Chieftains 1821

In the historic square of the village of Kompotades there is the monument of the chieftains of 1821. Among the old plane trees – which have been recognized as monuments of the nature and enjoy special protection – were met the chieftains Athanasios Diakos, Diovouniotis, Panourgias and Bishop Salonon Isaiah. Thus, on 20 April of 1821, they made the decision to confront the Ottoman forces headed by Omer Vryonis and Kiose Mehmet by cutting off their advance to the Peloponnese (Moria). Then they also decided to hold the battle in the area of Alamana, where Athanassios Diakos was arrested and led to Lamia.
