Monastery of Proussotissa

Monastery of Proussotissa

The Monastery of Proussotissa is located at Vardates, a small village at the foot of Mount Oiti, and built in a cave. The name of “Prousotissa” comes from the picture of the Virgin Mary who traveled during the period of intense Iconoclasm in the Proussa of Asia Minor to come to this position. The day is celebrated on August 23rd.

Right on top of it is the Athens – Thessaloniki Railway Line. Once, at this point, the derailment of a train occurred. The train was hanging on the cliff. But the passengers on the train were all saved. For this reason the Monastery is considered as a miraculous and the railway employees took over the monastery under their protection.

Today, one can climb up the old train station and enjoy the view of the Maliakos Gulf and the Sperchios river that extends in front of it.
