Athanasios Diakos was one of the Hellenic revolutionaries of 1821 and a distinguished hero – chieftain who fought for the liberation of his nation. According to some sources, he was born in 1788 either in Artotina or in Ano Mousounitsa of Fokida. Around his real name there is a lot of ambiguity. Some they call him Athanasios Grammatikos as well as others Athanasios Masavetas. The name oh ”Diakos” was acquired during his monastic life where he was ordained as a deacon.
His statue stands impressive in the Diakou square, in Lamia. Athanasios Diakos is appeared impetuous holding at his right hand his broken sword and pointing to Alamana. He reminds us of the brave struggle of the great hero of the 21st century in the battle of Alamana, after which he was arrested and dragged to Lamia, where he found his martyrdom.
